K.O.K.D.: An Abreviation on Dealing with the Devil

I am continually impressed and stirred by the timeless wisdom of C.S. Lewis.

Lewis had a helpful analysis on dealing with the devil:

“There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe, and to feel and excessive and unhealthy interest in them.”

It seems that people readily fall into either error. We bump into the wing nuts that see demonic activity behind every mishap: spilling orange juice in the morning and dropping the cornflakes (a demon of Kellogg’s is cited as the cause of the breakfast table disaster!), or a demon in their car is the reason the stubborn vehicle won’t start, rather than the fact the dopey driver left the lights on and consequently drained the battery. We also meet rationalist reductionists who dismiss the possibility of supernatural evil altogether.

If we take Jesus seriously, we will take his worldview seriously and the fact that his ministry involved dealing with and dismissing dark powers. We should not obsess about the dark side but we should take on board the big idea that the pursuit of God is played out in a spiritual combat zone.

Jesus calls his followers to live a life of spiritual passion and intensity and to live of a spiritual militancy. Jesus stated: “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it”(Matthew 11:12). Jesus calls us to a wholehearted pursuit of Himself and His rule and reign. This involves a radical disassociation from the kingdom of darkness. Paul’s counsel to the believing posse in Ephesus was:” do not give the devil a foothold.”

Alan Redpath was a wonderful Bible teacher who has gone home to be with the LORD. He was fond of inventing abbreviations. He asked are you an RFA Christian? Meaning a Ready-For-Anything Christian? Challenging his listeners to live at God’s disposal.

I am reminded of how Alan Redpath would conclude his letters: K-O-K-D. Keep on kicking the devil! Great advice that is congruent with the wisdom of an ancient apostle and a rock band from yesteryear. Listen into the podcast , “Speak of the devil,” and keep the late Alan Redpath’s exhortation in mind.

James tells us: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

As those eighties rockers (tooling up for a comeback), Stryper reminded us the Christian disposition towards the enemy of our souls should be: to hell with the devil!

To Hell With The Devil

Speak of the devil
He's no friend of mine
To turn from him is what we have in mind

Just a liar and a thief
The word tells us so
We like to let him know
Where he can go

To hell with the devil
To hell with the devil

When things are going wrong,
You know who to blame
He will always live
Up to his name

He's never been the answer
There's a better way
We are here to rock you
And to say...

To hell with the devil
