Sci-Fi Reloaded: Philosophy and Faith
Sci-Fi reloaded philosophy and faith
I was hooked on a Sci-Fi mini-series in the eighties that featured predatory aliens posing as peace-loving visitors. Of course, their goal was world domination. They were flesh-eating reptiles who came to take the world’s water and harvest humans. The show had a heroic resistance movement, a persecuted minority, youthful dupes and the storyline was a Nazi allegory. “V” (for visitors) originally aired in 1983 and spawned a sequence of spin-offs.
Now the visitors have returned in an updated TV series in which giant spaceships hover over major cities as the duplicitous aliens led by their gorgeous reptilian leader, Anna, prepare to take over the world.
“Don’t be frightened we mean no harm” The “visitors” present themselves of agents of healing and hope.
Science fiction has an enduring appeal.
Scott Wolf plays reporter Chad Decker who lands an exclusive interview with the alien leader. Wolf told USA Today:
“"On the surface, it's this really fun romp, and people who are sci-fi fans will have a lot to chew on, but at the same time, it's really driven by characters and big ideas.”
What are those big ideas? Are we alone in the universe? Are there extraterrestrials? Is there life on other planets or are we just cosmic orphans, all alone in the universe? V star Wolf doesn’t think the show is too farfetched. He thinks that there is life “out there” and that we could become a visited planet!
He told USA Today:
“The only thing that makes our show science fiction is the fact that it hasn't happened yet. What is so compelling is that it doesn't seem that far-fetched," he says. "When there's a group that's very different, unfortunately our first impulse is to be fearful and to worry and protect ourselves, and I think what our show is attempting to do is blur those lines between the good guys and the bad guys. Is there a way to coexist and rise above our initial fears and embrace something that feels very different? "
The good news is simply this: we are not alone in the universe and the earth is a visited planet!
Astronaut Colonel Jim Irwin stated,” "Jesus walking on the earth is more important than man walking on the moon". We are a visited planet. Wherever Jesus set foot, he left God’s footprints behind. The Creator God became fully human in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus is the Man from heaven who is God. As Advent, draws near we will reflect on the glory and humiliation of the incarnation.” The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)
During the coming season Christ followers of various tribes will remind themselves through liturgy and declare through song and spoken word that we are not alone .We can know God because Jesus is “Immanuel;” he is God-with-us!
